Overprotective Parents

We had a baby progress appointment on the 29th.  Katie is actually a 1/2 cm dilated and the kid is facing down and already half way through the birth canal.  Although it sounds like the baby could be coming any day, this apparently doesn't mean anything when predicting whether Katie is close or not to delivering.
On a separate note, the doctor once again talked about the importance of flu shots and the TDAP (Tetanus, Diphtheria and Pertussis) vaccine.  He told us that we should be very careful this time of year allowing people who have not had their shots come in contact with our new baby.  The flu and especially pertussis are fatal for newborns.  He was very serious about this at our last visit witch prompted us to insist the grandparents be vaccinated already.  The fact that he brought it up again during this last visit and the recent close call I had with being sick and having to be tested for pertussis really hit home for us.  I don't care if people think Katie and I seem paranoid or overprotective, but if you haven't had your vaccinations or feel a little under the weather please do not take the chance of passing on a potentially fatal disease to our precious new child.  Once again, I know this sounds a little harsh, but we are having a baby right in the middle of flu season and we really don't want to take any risks.  I hope those close to us understand.

  1. You are not being overly protective, you are being smart. We have been told the exact same thing numerous times by our OB/GYN and also at the Parenting class, etc. 4 babies have died in our county this year from whooping cough. This is serious business and if people don't understand, that is their problem. We are asking family too and they are cooperating but if they don't cooperate, than they won't be allowed to visit her:(

  2. I was a little behind on the blog...got my shot today. I'll stay away since my shot isn't effective for a week or so right? By away I mean the other side of the room, not the other side of the State. We've already made our hotel reservation for Saturday, hope there's a baby in the next few days so we get to use it!
