It's Getting Real

Katie and I visited the doctor this past Tuesday for a regular checkup on Katie and the baby.  This time we got to hear the baby's heart beat without using a stethoscope.  In the past Doctor Herman has used a stethoscope with two sets of ear pieces.  He would find the heart beat while he and Katie listened and then pass his set to me.  The best way to describe the sound is like a fast wooshing.  This last visit however, the doc used a new device that had a speaker on it.  He found the heart beat on Katie's growing belly and then played it out loud for all of us to hear.  As we were listening the speaker made a big staticy noise and Doctor Herman said that was the sound of the baby kicking.  Katie and I have been waiting patiently for her to finally get a chance to feel the baby move and it was great to know that it was moving around and active.  The Doc said Katie should be able to feel the baby move any day now, but it would be awhile before I would get a chance to feel it.
Last night Katie said that she was feeling a slight muscle like spasm on the side of her tummy.  She was unsure if it was the baby and kept having me feel it when it would happen.  Of course whenever she placed my hand on the spot it would stop. Finally, last night while we were lying in bed she felt it again.  This time I waited about 30 seconds before giving up and I felt a slight nudge.  I am pretty sure that it had to be the baby.  Katie and I started giggling and just laid there for some time feeling this small movement over and over again.  The two ultrasounds that we have had to see the baby were amazing, but feeling the baby actually move made it all very real.
I think I might have scared Katie a little though when I reminded her that the Doc told us I probably wouldn't get to feel the baby for another month or so.  This could only mean one thing, this baby must be huge to be able to feel it already.  This is not something that you want to remind a pregnant woman that is already concerned about passing something the size of a small watermelon through her Who Ha.  Regardless though, we are getting more and more excited by the day.  This next Tuesday the 31st, we finally get to find out if we are having a boy or a girl as long as the baby is cooperative.  Stay Tuned.
